A young Kathleen Bernard smashed Katherine Heard’s ascent record that she set in 1959 at the age of 53.
Calvin Hansen, for the fourth time in a row, took home the top spot but this time he had a race on his hands. Despite a 3m49s ascent PR Hansen found himself almost ten minutes behind Jerry Schmidt at the top. Schmidt’s new ascent record finally beat the time that Min the horse posted in 1959 when it reached the summit in 2:36:10. However the more experienced Hansen more than made up the lost time and set yet another marathon record.
The race’s only smoker, C.M. Schmidt, dropped out at the summit. The race founder, Dr. Suominen, also dropped out with cramps after getting to the summit.
