7:30 a.m. Sunday, August 19th, 1962 35 starters
Two young men from Kansas came to Manitou Springs and spent 2 and a half months working on the mountain laying railroad ties for the COG railway. After a month they were running up the peak in the morning, working a 9-hour day on the railway, and then running again in the evening. The heavy training paid off!
Mohler took the lead soon after the gun and never looked back. Rose got bad cramps and fell to 5th before he got things back under control. His years were yet to come. On the Womens side Mary Quinn killed the Ascent record by almost 30 minutes!
Thirty of the starters reached the top but several were held there due to two inches of snow, hail and rain that pummeled many of the slower runners. One of the first held back was 11-year-old Tim Morgan (son of the 8th place finisher) who had made the summit in 4:45:00 less than 5 minutes after the race founder, Dr. Suominen!!!

This change took place in 1976. The adjustment times are for comparisons only and were made by adding 6.3% to the Ascent time. The adjusted Ascent was then added to the actual Descent time to get the adjusted total.Last regenerated: 1/5/2019 12:04:57 PM
