> Qualifier -> Estimated Ascent Time

Overview

When registering for the Pikes Peak Ascent or Marathon, all runners must supply a qualifier. We then take these qualifiers and compare them with the results from previous runners with similar qualifiers. This produces an "Estimated Ascent Time" that is then used to determine which starting wave you will be placed into.

The top 90 men and top 90 women are placed in the 1st starting wave. Subsequent waves are filled based on a runners estimated ascent time.

You can use the forms below to calculate your estimated ascent time based on your qualifier. If you have several possible qualifiers, we suggest that you use the one that produces the fastest estimated ascent time.

Runners have until August 1st to update their qualifier with a "better" one. To do so, edit your registration

We will also automatically factor in the current year Garden 10 Mile and BTMR results as long as you used the same RunSignUp account to register for all of your races. If your GoG or BTMR result produces a faster estimated ascent time, it will be used in place of your other qualifier.

Note: The times produced below may be +/- a second or so due to rounding differences.

Recent Ascent or Marathon Time

All runners who completed either the Pikes Peak Marathon or Ascent within the cutoffs in the last 4 years (2021+) may use their results as a qualifier.

The estimated ascent time is your finish time (Ascent finishers) or your summit split (Marathon finishers). Your fastest time from the past 4 years will be used.

Note: 2024 PPM runners will use twice their Barr Camp Split in place of their summit time. So if you reached Barr Camp in 2:10:00, your estimated ascent time is 4:20:00.

5x (or more) Pikes Peak Runners

5+ Time Peak Veterans may use a Pikes Peak Ascent or Marathon time as far back as 1 year for each Pikes Peak Ascent or Marathon finish completed within the cutoff. For example, if you have completed the PPA and PPM a combined total of 10 times, you may use an Ascent or Marathon time as old as 2015.

The formula used is your summit time + 10 minutes for every year back you are going over 4 years (a 2020 time would add 10 minutes)

Note: 2018 PPA runners will use twice the Barr Camp Split in place of their summit time. So if you reached Barr Camp in 2:10:00, enter your time as 4:20:00.

Self-Timed Run

A self-timed qualifier consists of either:

  • Completing a 10 mile run in under 2:10:00. (Ascent Only!) Longer distances may be used as long as the average pace of the run is under 13 minutes per mile.
  • Completing a 20 mile run in under 4:30:00. Longer distances may be used as long as the average pace of the run is under 13:30 minutes per mile.

The run must be outdoors (no treadmills) and recorded using an GPS enabled app or device.

You may also submit a race time for races that don't meet the "Other" category but are not standard half or full marathons as long as the minimum distance and time requirements outlined above are met.

Note that course difficulty is not taken into account under any circumstances!

The formula used is Time * 1.139 ((26.2 / dist) ^ 1.07)
(The Riegel 26.2 estimator + the "full marathon" estimator outlined above)
